FAQ

The questions we hear most, answered.

Setup & Connection

Q1 Do I need a hub to connect Matter or Zigbee devices?

Yes. Matter (Thread) and Zigbee devices need something with a built-in hub. A recent smart TV, monitor or soundbar can serve that role, as can a dedicated hub dongle.

Q2 Device setup stalls at 44% or 99%.

A stall at 99% usually means account authentication failed or cloud registration is delayed. Move the device and your phone right next to the router, close the app completely, and try again.

Q3 Wi-Fi setup reports that the device cannot be found.

Most SmartThings appliances support only the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band. In your phone settings, turn off the 5 GHz-only connection, select the 2.4 GHz network name (SSID), and try again.

Q4 Can registration fail if more than ten devices are on the router?

Home routers sometimes refuse new connections once the simultaneous-device limit is reached. Disconnect devices you are not using, or check the maximum connection count in your router settings.

Q5 Device registration fails on a mobile network (LTE/5G).

During initial setup, temporarily turn off your phone's automatic switch to mobile data. The appliance broadcasts a temporary Wi-Fi signal with no internet access, and the phone drops it as a dead connection.

Q6 The app crashes before the home screen or device list appears.

A missing date of birth on the account can crash the app. Go to Settings > Accounts > Profile info on your phone, enter your date of birth, and save.

Q7 What if the QR code is damaged or will not scan?

You can register manually through Add device > Select device > Search by model name. On appliances, holding the pairing button (for example, the Wi-Fi button for three seconds) makes the device discoverable.

Everyday Use & Control

Q8 A device that was working now shows as offline.

Check that the router is powered on, then unplug the device and plug it back in after a minute. If that does not help, removing the device in the SmartThings app and registering it again is the most reliable fix.

Q9 I cannot control my appliances when away from home.

The device must stay connected to the hub or Wi-Fi router at home. Also check that the SmartThings app on your phone is allowed to use remote control and mobile data.

Q10 Do I have to register everything again after changing phones?

No. Device information is stored with your cloud account. Sign in with the same account on the new phone and your device list and room layout sync across as they were.

Q11 Location-based routines do not run on time.

Location permissions on the phone are the usual cause. Go to Settings > Apps > SmartThings > Permissions > Location and turn on both Allow all the time and Use precise location.

Q12 The PC app cannot find my phone or tablet.

Check that the PC and the mobile device are signed in to the same account, and that Settings > Find is turned on in the SmartThings app on the mobile device.

Q13 How do I disconnect a linked third-party service?

In the SmartThings app, go to Menu > Services > Linked services, select the brand, and tap Unlink account to remove them all at once.

Q14 Does it work with external voice assistants?

Yes. Search for SmartThings under Add device in the voice assistant app and link your account, and you can control your registered devices by voice.

Q15 How do I let family members control my devices?

From the room selector at the top left of the SmartThings home screen, choose Manage location > Invite member. Enter the person's account email or show them the QR code.

Care & Updates

Q16 Energy figures differ from my utility bill.

The figures in the app are estimates from sensors inside each appliance, so small differences from the meter are expected. For a closer comparison, set the app's billing start date to match your utility's meter-reading date.

Q17 How do I send system logs for a recurring problem?

Right after the problem occurs, open Menu > Contact us > Report an error at the bottom right of the SmartThings app. Be sure to check Send system log data and describe the symptoms in detail so the report can be analyzed properly.

Q18 Where do I update an appliance's firmware?

Open the appliance's detail page and use More (three dots) > Information at the top right to check for and install the latest version. If Wi-Fi stays connected, you can also enable automatic updates during standby.

Q19 After an app update, my devices disappeared or the app keeps restarting.

This can happen when an app framework update fails. Uninstall the SmartThings app and reinstall the latest version from the app store. If the fault is in the device itself, it may need service.
